Masada

Masada

Masada is a short drive from the Dead Sea and 100% worth the excursion. I had know idea this place existed until I was planning this trip and looking for sights along our route. It has to be one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been. It’s like no other place like this on earth. When imagining Masada think Gondor in Lord of the Rings.

Masada was the last Jewish stronghold taken by the Romans. This self-sustaining fortress took years to conquer. Once you are there you will understand why. We would have taken the Snake Path, which ascends 400m from the lowest place on earth. However, it was threatening rain and were told that it can be quite dangerous in poor weather conditions. Instead we took the gondola.

There is so much to see at the top. There are different chambers, with many historical plaques and views of the Moab Mountains and Jordan from across the Dead Sea. Plan to take your time. Also, plan to bring a sweater or jacket. Even with the heat below, we found the breeze to be chilly up top.
